The Sailmaker's Mate specialty only went to petty officer first class and was discontinued in 1939. The Shipfitter ones all come from the same chief. The Electrician's Mate ones are from another chief and were all his. Chief Shipfitter Baker rates Mid-late 40's 50's Chief Smith, WW2 era Chief Quartermaster, Korean War era Aviation Machinist's Mate. 50's Chief Crytogropher Equiptment Operator. Senior Chief Air Controlman in bullion and good conduct gold chevrons. Since Senior Chief and Master Chief were introduced in 1958 and in the first year or two the "stars' were individually applied to E7 rating badges, I would date this rating badge to be post-1960. Jason Jason, I have one of these in 1st Class. Since the Water Tender petty officers were always trying to differentiate themselves from the Machinist's Mates and Boilermakers, they sometimes, unofficially, purchased a Motor Machinist's Mate crow and picked out the "M" and "O" threads, resulting in a "one blade up propeller" for their specialty mark. This was never official, and if you hold up a rating badge having "one blade up" against a light source, you can usually see where the "M" and "O" previously existed. I can see this on my 1st class crow having the one blade up propeller. I'd bet that no major rating badge producer made a "one blade up propeller" rating badge, but some custom tailors might have produced one for a Water Tender petty officer having a uniform tailor made and requesting that type of rating badge. I can't be sure but the material looks to be the lighter shade of blue (almost Air Force blue) the Coast Guard has used since about 1975. Not the most spectacular or rare just a group I purchased years ago that seem to span the real bullion to the current so called bullion (although I see that real bullion and lace is being sold again at the uniform shop in Pearl) and they came from one individual. This first one is attached to an aviation photographer CPO's uniform. the blouse has WW-II ribbons sewn on, including a Purple Heart. This one is a Senior Chief Petty Officer Gunner's mate. The blouse has a relatively large custom-made ribbon rack with WW-II and Korean War awards/decs. I was told by the guy I got this from that the owner was a young Seaman Gunner's Mate aboard the U.S.S Hornet at the time of the Doolittle raid. This is the last one I can get my hands on at the moment. Actually, it's one picture of two different CPO blouses. Both are aviation ratings and both entire uniforms were both posted on the aviation greens thread so I didn't see a need to post them singally again here. The additional one shows the ribbons and hash marks as well. He was obviously in the service at least until the mid-1950s as he has a National Defense ribbon.
