Some Navy/Coast Guard bullion rating badges are more striking than others.

Here's a Navy Steward bullion rating badge that I think is especially nicely done...

This Aviation Metalsmith has what appears to be two different types of bullion.

This is one of John Helvey's Aviation Photographer bullion rating badges. I like it a lot, although it looks to be more like the white synthetic bullion from the 1970s through late 1980s than pure silver bullion from the 1940s-1950s era.

Here's is a Machinist's Mate CPO bullion with fake jewel mounted in the center of the bullion specialty mark. I lost the bidding for this badge about two years ago on evil bay.

Not really spectacular looking, but rare in bullion. The Sailmaker's Mate specialty only went to petty officer first class and was discontinued in 1939. (From John Helvey's rare CPO rating badge collection which was stolen from a Kansas City, MO recruiting station, I believe in the 1990s)

The Electrician's Mate ones are from another chief and were all his.

Pre-1948 Pharmacist's Mate in the less common petty officer first class bullion.

post-769-1226932991.jpg

Senior Chief Air Controlman in bullion and good conduct gold chevrons.

Since Senior Chief and Master Chief were introduced in 1958 and in the first year or two the "stars' were individually applied to E7 rating badges, I would date this rating badge to be post-1960. Does it look foreign made to anyone else? Not Gemsco style, but could be a Vanguard variation...not sure?

Here is a interesting rate, not sure if this could be a water tender cpo or not. Has sewn on chevrons.

post-2501-1226961960.jpg

Jason,

I have one of these in 1st Class. Since the Water Tender petty officers were always trying to differentiate themselves from the Machinist's Mates and Boilermakers, they sometimes, unofficially, purchased a Motor Machinist's Mate crow and picked out the "M" and "O" threads, resulting in a "one blade up propeller" for their specialty mark. This was never official, and if you hold up a rating badge having "one blade up" against a light source, you can usually see where the "M" and "O" previously existed. I can see this on my 1st class crow having the one blade up propeller.

I'd bet that no major rating badge producer made a "one blade up propeller" rating badge, but some custom tailors might have produced one for a Water Tender petty officer having a uniform tailor made and requesting that type of rating badge.

Anyone else have any thoughts on this subject?

Modern Senior Chief Yeoman

This one appears to be a Coast Guard Senior Chief Yeoman. I can't be sure but the material looks to be the lighter shade of blue (almost Air Force blue) the Coast Guard has used since about 1975. Also the style of manufacturing matches some Coast Guard rating badges I have in my collection.

W.A.V.E.S. Storekeeper CPO, bullion, WWII.

WAVES rating badges had embroidered chevrons during WWII and not the "applied" chevrons like the vast majority of the male rating badges.

WW II CPO Signalman

Bill, I may be mistaken, but the eagle appears to be facing its right making it a left sleeve (post 1949) rating badge. Am I seeing that wrong?

Well, just waiting for the guests and thought I wold post these. Not the most spectacular or rare just a group I purchased years ago that seem to span the real bullion to the current so called bullion (although I see that real bullion and lace is being sold again at the uniform shop in Pearl) and they came from one individual.

I only have a couple bullion Navy ratings. This first one is attached to an aviation photographer CPO's uniform. the blouse has WW-II ribbons sewn on, including a Purple Heart.

post-1107-1231005887.jpg

This one is a Senior Chief Petty Officer Gunner's mate. The blouse has a relatively large custom-made ribbon rack with WW-II and Korean War awards/decs. I was told by the guy I got this from that the owner was a young Seaman Gunner's Mate aboard the U.S.S Hornet at the time of the Doolittle raid.

post-1107-1231006047.jpg

This is the last one I can get my hands on at the moment. Actually, it's one picture of two different CPO blouses. Both are aviation ratings and both entire uniforms were both posted on the aviation greens thread so I didn't see a need to post them singally again here.

Nice rating badges, Bill.

I like the Photographer's Mate, which he had switched to the post-1947 design, so he must have remained in the service after WWII.

Hi Dan. I took another photo and attached it below. The additional one shows the ribbons and hash marks as well. He was obviously in the service at least until the mid-1950s as he has a National Defense ribbon. Also slightly unusual is that he has an EAME campaign ribbon with stars but no AsiaPac campaign ribbon.

Hi all,

Here's a bullion cpo steward or cook that is on a uniform. I believe it is foreign talor uniform. Look at the eagle and chevrons.
