bellasilva Posted October 9, 2017 Share #33 Posted October 9, 2017 Absolutely incredible group, Mark. The German helmet bringback completes it. Love it.
anton67 Posted October 10, 2017 Author Share #34 Posted October 10, 2017 Thank you all for the kind comments. How do we know the snaps are replacements on the canteen? I am not disagreeing. I just want more information? On Saturday I went back and gave the vets son copies of the documents I found on Ancestry relating to his Fathers service. He was very happy that the uniform and helmet went to someone who would appreciate it. He was in tears he was so happy that the memory of his Father was still alive. I also picked up the 5 volume set of the history of the 28th from Him.

But that field repair (or modification) is what makes that canteen so cool. Troy

anton67 Posted October 10, 2017 Author Share #38 Posted October 10, 2017 Thank you Troy, Thanks for the info. It is an interesting item. It is hard to believe they would go through so much trouble to repair a canteen. What is also interesting is the fact that the vets son told me that it was his father's canteen yet the markings do not seem to jive. I think the vet must have picked up another soldier's canteen along the way.

I think the vet must have picked up another soldier's canteen along the way. I have seen a 1918 reprint of the 1915 manual, Instructions for the Care and Repair of Small Arms and Ordnance Equipment. It includes detailed instructions, photos, and drawings for the repair of canteens and canteen covers amongst all the other material covered. I think the vet must have picked up another soldier's canteen along the way. It may not have been a repair, but just wanted to flash up his canteen during some down time. Remember most gear prior to the build up for WWI was using the fancy eagle snaps and maybe he wanted that look.
anton67 Posted October 11, 2017 Author Share #41 Posted October 11, 2017 Thanks again for the great info. I am really happy to have been fortunate enough to get these items. I was there at 6 am for the 9 am estate sale. First one in the door and I went strait for the military items. There were a few military collectors behind me at the door. 36thIDAlex Posted June 12, 2018 Share #48 Posted June 12, 2018 WOW, that’s quite a grouping you got there! It still baffles me to his day that people are willing to sel or give such priceless family history, but at least we know it’s going to a great home. Love the story and artifacts, just goes to show this stuff is all still out there hiding!
anton67 Posted June 12, 2018 Author Share #49 Posted June 12, 2018 Keep in mind that the son is in his 80s and has nobody in the family who has interest in their Grandfathers items.
