Fun project. We have some collectors here, probably foremost Adam R. that have some really old ones with low CSCs. Many have been posted here if you do a search. My two oldest are

Peter Thomas, enlisted 7/15/91 at Boston, CSC # 10661

John H. Rosloof, enlisted 1/16/94 at NYC, CSC# 12332

Both are engraved "USS New York" on the back. Rosloof, a Finnish immigrant to New York, also earned a USS New York Sampson, West Indies and WWI Victory that have been posted here. Thomas was a black man, and one of the few of that era that was not a steward or cook. He served nearly 29 years and made water tender 1/c pretty early on, never making chief. He also had a USS New Orleans Sampson Medal and West Indies Campaign (location unknown) and possibly other campaign medals during his long career. I'm honored to have his GCM planchet. I'm sure he didn't have it easy by any stretch.

Yeah, tonight I plan on searching through a post on here that's for Navy good conducts and bouncing around on Google Images for some more. Main reason I decided to do this is to hopefully I D A Good Conduct bar I have that has no name.

Great early airdale group.  Id'd Dominicans, much less in a group, are not that common. I have an identical group of those 4 medals (White Sea bar on the Victory for service on USS Olympia, as was the Dominican)  to a mustang machinist mate that wasn't an enlisted man long enough to qualify for a good conduct, bought from his grandson that didn't want them.  Do you know if this group had a good conduct? Interesting pay notation in his CSC, "discharge gratuity" of $60?

Thank you for the comments. The family could not locate the GCM when I came into the group years ago. They have a long family history tied to Duke University.

Hello,

been awhile since I posted, but I collect US Navy medals roughly 1898 to just after WW1.  I am still trying to educate myself and have a couple questions. Question:  I see Sweazy21 has on his GCM list a sailor who enlisted 1/16/1894 and was issued a Continuous Service certificate of #12332.  I purchased 2 loose clasps on a length of old ribbon without medal, having C.S.C. # 12491.  Can I understand from this my man enlisted in 1894 ?  I am assuming these certificates were issued sequentially, with no regard to location of enlistment, etc. My 2nd question, is there anyway to find out who this #12491 was issued to ? The 2 clasps are Montana 5-27-1912, and Kearsarge 5-27-1916.  The clasps came with a Phillipine Insurrection medal with number 2195.  I know there is a Navy roll for this medal but can’t get anything on that number from the OMSA online  rolls. Anyone know who #2195 belonged to ?   O.k. I’ll shut up now.

Unfortunately the only way to locate a name with the csc number is if the book turns up or the planchet itself turns up and has the number engraved on it as well.
You have a really nice group, I was tempted to pick it up myself just for the bars.

Sweazy,

maybe so.  When you say the book, do you mean a reference that may exist, but hasn’t found its’ way into public view yet ?  I checked out your site, nicely laid out, and some nice stuff showcased.  I have a few names for your CSC list  if you don’t have em already. The dates are medal dates.  I added their rates for interest.

20067 Leroy Dupree, July 30, 1910 ( Steward)

Ahoy, Beans,   I'm the owner of GCM #12332 you mention in your post, with medal date of January 19, 1900 (exactly 121 years ago today, by gum)  and verified first enlistment date of January 16, 1894.   Which exactly checks out since back then a man had to do six years continuous service to qualify for the Navy Good Conduct Medal.   So given the known data points on Sweazy's list I would say it's very likely we can interpolate your unknown sailor with CSC 12491 enlisted in 1894 and the lost medal is dated 1900.   My GCM is part of a group including a Sampson (Gunners Mate 3d class on USS New York)  and West Indies.   I would surmise based on the Philippines and the 2 battleship bars, that your man was a squared away sailor and likely a petty officer 3rd or 2nd class by 1900,  who served on battleships or cruisers.   He well might have had a Dewey medal as many of the men in Dewey's Asiatic Squadron went on after Manila Bay to earn Philippine Campaigns.    Sorry, below link starts at end of long post, pix of the GCM are on page 1 or 2.

No, i’m referring to his continuous service certificate book/document. That’s my bad for not specifically saying that.

Here is an example from my collection

I didn’t include a photo, but the bars and Phil. Navy Campaign came with a numbered West Indies medal. Did any ships from Dewey’s Squadron qualify for that one.  If I read correctly it only required 1 day’s service in “theatre” to qualify for the medal.  Thanks for the affirmation on 1894.  Very interesting the Rosloof group !

Hey Rob,  if both the West Indies and the Phil. belong to your guy, we can rule out that he was with Dewey at Manila Bay, since those sailors and marines would have gotten Spanish Campaign Medals, identical in front design to the short lived West Indies Medal.  And yes, I  believe one day service during the qualifying period would do it as you said.   I would check the qualifying ships for the West Indies Medal and those for the Phil. and see what overlap there was as far as ships that qualified for both.   Your sailor would have had a Sampson medal though,  in all likelihood.   I believe the OMSA medal rolls come from the Gleim Medal Letters, and are also in his book, so if you checked the number of the West Indies online and nothing came up,  unless some researcher randomly happens on it while searching a man's NARA St. Louis records by name, no way to ID by number at this time.  What's the West Indies # if you don't mind?
