cmt04444 Posted September 19, 2017 Share #1 Posted September 19, 2017 This guy is coming up at an auction soon, it's not an a2, so I don't know how much that effects the value. I'm hoping I can get it.
Blacksmith Posted September 19, 2017 Share #2 Posted September 19, 2017 So it's a non-military leather jacket?
CNY Militaria Posted September 19, 2017 Share #3 Posted September 19, 2017 An A-2 holds value on it's own because of what it is....this is not an A-2 though, so it has to be judged based on being a painted private jacket. Better photos of the painting is needed to really assess however.
rmoore456 Posted September 19, 2017 Share #4 Posted September 19, 2017 This strikes me as a fashion jacket. Ray
phantomfixer Posted September 20, 2017 Share #5 Posted September 20, 2017 IMO it has the feel of a post war veterans jacket, with the 8th AF and B-17 on the back and the 9th AF on the right chest...I do not know the other squadron patches on the front... There is photo evidence of 3/4 length leather jackets worn on AAF fields...but this is not common...PP jackets usually fell in line with the A-2 style
ludwigh1980 Posted September 20, 2017 Share #6 Posted September 20, 2017 I would say the jacket dates from the 1930's based on the style and bevo tag. It was a style favored by private aviators and airmail pilots. Maybe the guy was a civilian aviator and then went into the air corps during WW2. I collected these for a time and this one definitely dates pre-war and is an exceptional example. Sometimes you will see these painted up for barnstormer pilots of the 1920-30's. I am liking this jacket very much, especially with the 8th AF connection.
awm Posted September 20, 2017 Share #7 Posted September 20, 2017 The Fightin' Bitin' squadron patch is one of the 306th Bomb Group squadrons.

cmt04444 Posted September 20, 2017 Author Share #9 Posted September 20, 2017 It comes with his medals and a piece a flak that came through the turret and hit his leg. I like it even though it's not an a2.
Kadet Posted September 20, 2017 Share #10 Posted September 20, 2017 I kind of like this jacket and think it may be perfectly original. I have a very non-standard 501st BS leather jacket in my collection. Mine is actually cut like a battle dress or Ike jacket with pull tapes on either side. I think it may be Australian-made. Non-standard and private purchase leather jackets were certainly worn war time, but don't command as much $ as an actual A2.
