SKIPH Posted August 20, 2017 Share #3 Posted August 20, 2017 It's a pilot's knife from the early 50s. Camillus, Imperial, & Schrade made them. Nice little knives. SKIP
Misfit 45 Posted August 20, 2017 Share #4 Posted August 20, 2017 Your knife is shown in Cole's Book III as one of the "USN-Mark 1 & Related Knives". It's No.16 on page 79. I cannot comment any further, but it's a start. Marv
MattS Posted August 20, 2017 Author Share #5 Posted August 20, 2017 Worth $20?
sactroop Posted August 20, 2017 Share #6 Posted August 20, 2017 While the Navy set up the contract for these knives, it was available to other branches of the service. As I understand it this knife was the first example of this practice. So you talked it down from $25? Sounds good to me.
MattS Posted August 20, 2017 Author Share #7 Posted August 20, 2017 Thanks guys! I went back and got it for $20. Any and all suggestions on cleaning/removing rust are welcome, thanks!
MattS Posted August 20, 2017 Author Share #8 Posted August 20, 2017 Going with the "less is better" method, I used the finest steel wool I had (#0000) and lightly scraped off the surface rust and oiled the blade and pommel. I don't think it looks too bad for a 65 year old $20 knife!
SKIPH Posted August 20, 2017 Share #9 Posted August 20, 2017 Cleaned up better than I thought it would. Good job! SKIP
MattS Posted August 20, 2017 Author Share #10 Posted August 20, 2017 The light makes the blade look shiny, it's actually still pretty dark. Thanks Skip!
MattS Posted August 20, 2017 Author Share #11 Posted August 20, 2017 Can someone please show me the correct sheath for this knife? Thanks!
MattS Posted August 20, 2017 Author Share #12 Posted August 20, 2017 I found a later sheath that's sewn to a SRU-21P pilot's survival vest. Not correct I'm sure, but it fits nicely!
Gardner11 Posted August 20, 2017 Share #13 Posted August 20, 2017 Sir I have this knife if you PM me your email address I will send you a picture of the sheath .
sactroop Posted August 21, 2017 Share #14 Posted August 21, 2017 Here are some. Whether the specific knife had a straight guard or the more M3 like bent guard, most of the knives were delivered with a sheath that had the corner of the blade pocket cut at an angle to accommodate the bent guard. Also the number of rivets used changed.
