Use of the word INSIGNE, to describe a single item, vs insignia which would describe multiple items. Insignia has crept into todays english usage. "IN YORKTOWN" old usage to describe the ship you were assigned to. We use On Yorktown commonly today. Old Navy you were ships company, assigned in the ship, and the Captain would refer to you as 'my people'.. Old editions of All Hands ran a series of tidbit articles that explained the origins of the old obcsure parts of naval terminology. Some neat stuff..
