Help M-1917 helmet

Recommended Posts

No authenticity issue, it's a legit U.S. manufactured M1917. However, it looks like the chinstrap is broken and suffers from "red rot". I don't know the scientific definition or explanation but basically the leather turns red, becomes very soft and crumbles. Anything the affected leather comes in contact with will also get a red powdery residue on it. Once it starts it cannot be stopped.

Nothing wrong with this one. The rotting leather that yp221 refers to is caused by the simple fact that leather is made from dead animal hyde, thus it is organic. Tanning slows the process but, it will eventually rot. Keep it in an environmentally controlled area and you'll keep the process from advancing quickly.

Thanks for your report, this will be my first Dough boy helmet,it was expensive 130 euros for it?

May be in the States are cheaper and easily to find than Spain.?

It is much easier to find M-1 helmets in Europe than to find a good M-1917 so, that is not a bad price. If you had bought it from America, it would have cost you a lot for shipping which would have added at least $50 to the cost. You did good!
