stratasfan Posted August 9, 2017 Share #1 Posted August 9, 2017 Hi, All! Here is something completely new for me! I've had this wooden ammo box for more than 15 years. Would love anybody's help about what it is and when/where it would have been used. It has some markings on it, and I tried to photograph them so you can read it. It was for TNT for Cannon/Mortar? Also, it has a 1968 stamp on the bottom, so am hoping someone knows when these were actually used. Thanks for any help and I welcome all thoughts! I can take more photos if you'd like to see something in particular!

stratasfan Posted August 9, 2017 Author Share #3 Posted August 9, 2017 Wow! This big box for just two of those! What a "bullet"! Thanks for those links! I didn't realize that would be the Mortar number! There are so many "codes" on it, I felt overwhelmed! Any thoughts about how old this case is? RedLegGI Posted August 9, 2017 Share #4 Posted August 9, 2017 Unless it was repacked, I'd say the 1968 date is probably accurate. So the crate reads as a 4.2" HE shell with supplemental charge without the fuze. The fuze would be set by the mortar crew operating it. As for the numbers across the top (1315...), it might be the lot code, or the stock number.
USARV72 Posted August 10, 2017 Share #5 Posted August 10, 2017 Yes, 4.2 mortar round box. We filled emptys with sand/ dirt to make a pit for our mortars. Fired many a round, thats why my hearing is " shot". Also used for make do shelving in the hootch and they could be locked to keep mamma-san honest. stratasfan Posted August 10, 2017 Author Share #6 Posted August 10, 2017 Thanks! Any ideas on the resale value? Also, is this something that is really something that has a resale market? I know shipping would be a bit hefty, but still . . . maybe someone wants one? Thanks!

Did they stand them on end or actually mount them to a wall?
Steve B. Posted August 11, 2017 Share #8 Posted August 11, 2017 These boxes used to be a dime a dozen, but the last few I've had flew off the shelf at the antique store in the $15-$25 range. Maybe I'm not asking enough
USARV72 Posted August 12, 2017 Share #9 Posted August 12, 2017 Guys put a shelf in them, stood on end nailed to the wall. In fire bases and those in the boonies they were used in whatever was easy. Check some books and there are pics of them being used.
