Hi,

I've seen several supposedly 'authentic' pictures of helmets worn by men of the 4th ID on Utah Beach, in Bastogne, Hurtgen forest, that had the 4ID Ivy Leaf painted on front of the helmet or on the sides of the helmet. Any one know how common this was? I have seen pics of 4th ID Officers with the Ivy Leaf on front of their helmets. Also, a helmet worn on Utah Beach was recently shown in an article with the man that wore it. It has a bullet hole in it and the vet survived. The helmet was smooth, no grit at all on it. In various books I've seen ETO helmets with no cork grit. How common was the smooth no grit finish in the ETO? You almost always see grit on Pacific helmets. Any opinions?
