Thanks to everyone for the comments. Here is Angstadt mounted on Good Chance. Note the plated sword hilt. The chrome or nickeled sword hilts were usually worn with full dress.

SPEECHLESS, that's really the only word that comes to mind. The absolute finest China Marine group I think I have ever seen or will ever see. Love the book too.

Thanks for the comments on the group and my China Horse Marine book. Here is a riding crop which was a prize awarded for the Legation Guard's Cup Race to Russell A. Bowers for second place.

Russell Anderson Bowers was born in Bicknell, Indiana, on February 9, 1912. He enlisted in the United States Marine Corps on March 6, 1934. After boot camp at Paris Island, South Carolina, Bowers served at several stations before sailing in 1935 on the USS Chaumont to serve at the American Legation, Peiping, China. He was first assigned to Company ''B'' but was later assigned to the Headquarters Detachment, Mounted Detachment in October 1935. He served the remainder of his time in China with the Mounted Detachment. One of the duties of the Mounted Detachment was as the Legation Military Police, the Horse Marines patrolled the narrow streets of Peiping and the surrounding countryside on horseback to protect American missionaries and businessmen from the many bands of bandits roving the Chinese countryside. Bowers took part in the Legation Guards Race Cup at Paomachang, China, which was a nine furlong race. Bowers placed second riding “Whisky Bill” and won the riding crop pictured below. During World War Two Bowers served with Battery "C", Second Special Weapons Battalion Sixth Marines on Guadalcanal. He was wounded in action while serving with the Military Police Company Headquarters Battalion First Marine Division in 1950 during the Korean War. Russell Anderson Bowers died in San Diego, California on October 7, 1997.

Outstanding. Do you have mention in your book of China Marine or in your notes of: Vincent aka James Logrippo? He served in Haiti before going to China in 1928.? Here is pic of him on Custom's Building roof, in Shanghai. Thanks again for posting. Richard .
