It's a lapel button hole badge with R.E.Lee on the face , impressed lettering on the back of the face is ,"Confederate Vet Assn. of Ky " . Engraved on the cap is ,"J.E.Hedges C.S.A.".What makes this Badge special is Hedges was part of the escort for Jefferson Davis effort to reach the trans Mississippi at the end of the war. 9th Cavalry Regiment [also called 4th Mounted Rifles] was organized in December, 1862, by consolidating Breckinridge's and Stoner's Kentucky Cavalry Battalions. A detachment surrendered with the Army of Tennessee, but the main part of the unit escorted President Davis southward and surrendered in May, 1865. Colonel William C.P. Breckinridge, Lieutenant Colonel Robert G. Stoner, and Majors John P. Austin and William E. Attributed to Joseph Bryan a member of J.S.Mosbys partisan rangers. Twice wounded in action. A mourning letter and card accompany where in ,Belle Bryan tried to give the badge to her brother in law. In this letter he returns it and ask that she wear it and then pass it on to her grandchildren. The ANV badges are my favorite and some are exceptionall beautiful. skypilot6670 Posted July 21, 2017 Author Share #10 Posted July 21, 2017 Dated on the back 1925.A proud unit ,that is still active as Battery B 111 Field Artillery Virginia National guard.Fought thru the civil war , action against Poncho Via ,WW1 and Normandy invasion. I believe this to predate the United Confederate Veterans .The badge is pin back and about 5/8 inch round. It came from the family of Lieut. William Randolph McEntire. He was involved in the capture of Andrews Raiders from the great locomotive chase.His obituary published in Confederate Veteran magazine, is accessible on line with a google search and is an interesting read,it talks of his involvement in the capture but not in detail.Sadly he is not wearing it in this picture,my guess the badge he has on is an early U.C.V..
