US Army Early Aviation/Transportation Patches

I found this in a Google search it might get you the ID you need, scroll down and you will see a picture of the patch that looks like your decal.

 

Patch is for the 64th Transport Company, the direct lineage for the 114th. Formed early 1956, thru till March 1958, merged with 544th Trans Det into C/17th.

Good job on that link, didn't spot it, excellent that the patch is depicted, not sure thought if this decal posted by rooster was worn on the helmet liner of troops of this unit, probably put on other items like unit footlockers, cabinets, fight bags etc etc.

A cool find from the USAEUR Site of a Aviation Patch in Action that merits a posting here, the 90th Aviation Company U.S. 7th Army 1967-68, a crew of a C-37 Mojave the colors of Bavaria on it's nose. Besides the pocket patch, it shows a rare shot of the manner in which EMs in Flight status in Aviation units of the day wore their Rank Insignia on this particular model flight jacket, they wore it as we see on the chest as a single patch, the wearing of them on the sleeves in the familiar way was impracticable because of the pen holder/pocket on the left sleeve, shoulder patches yes (Except probably of the big ones like the 1st Cav Div, 2nd Inf Div and the 16th and 20th Corps, both of the latter active in the 50s-60s). In other units the Rank was worn above the U.S. ARMY Tape, but in this one it's worn above the NAME Tape, I guess because this unit choose to wear their PP above the U.S. ARMY Tape rather than below it, thus necessitating the wear on it on the other side.

That site has a lot of really good information on it but there are gaps occasionally, probably because a soldier hasn't found the site to submit anything they know or the written information available doesn't contain a unit that was deployed. There is a patch for the 517th TC Det that appears to be a companion to the 90th patch. Information gathered from a different source puts the 517th in Illeshein/Hanau in 1961. The patch appears to be German made as do the 90th patches but perhaps from a different source as the manufacturing differences can be detected. This is also a variation of the 90th as the lettering is blue rather that white. The 90th became the 295th Avn Co using the CH-54 after returning to the US. The 517th kind of disappears although a 517th Trans Co (AVIM) shows up in 1965 in Germany and is there until 1968. It shows up as being at Fort Bragg in 1978.

The owner of a Cessna LC-126 told me that when he stripped the paint, he could see the outline of an Army Transportation Command insignia with train, plane, truck, and ship. Unfortunately, he didn't make a tracing of it and when he contacted the Transportation Command to get the artwork, they didn't know anything about such an insignia. It would have probably dated to 1950's, no later than mid 60's.

I would like to add to this thread my Corps of Engineer aviation patches. I'm not to sure about the second 20th Eng Bde patch and the first 937th Eng Gp patch.  I was able to pick up the Taz patch when it came out at one of the concession stores at Fort Bragg.

An Aviation Detachment U..S. Army Japan PP, which is surly Japanese made, we guess of the 1960s, see how it incorporates the Design of the U.S. Army Japan shoulder patch in it,

Here's a rare one, the 111th Aviation Company of the 53rd Armored Brigade (Sep) of the Florida National Guard, shirt around 1967-70.

gwb does not have this shirt no more, so he can't take a close up of the pocket patch, so I had to enlarge it as best as possible. It is as you see a Florida Alligator upright with his arms crossed with unit, 111th Aviation Co on the scroll. Today the 111th Aviation Company is a full regiment, the 111th Aviation Regiment in the Florida National Guard, and I believe supports the entire Fla NG.

Hey you know this is the first time we're seeing that this guy was in the CBI in WWII, check out the combat patch, its the CBI. Probably an officer right, he wore metal Rank and BOS on the collar which was somewhat typical in the 50s early-mid 60s, less so by the mid 60s.

 

Do you still have this shirt Tex? If so can you check the collars of it to see if there were metal insignia once pinned on them, as it's highly unlikly this guy. a WWII CBI Vet was a slick Sleeve Pvt in the 1960s.

This a Pre Vietnam Early 60s one. (This one is up on the Bay right now if one is interested.

 

 

 

And this one sold long time ago, images still floating around of it.

 

Not sure of time period, 50s-60s when it was a Ft Hood, I'm imaging it's for the old 1st Armd Div's Aviation Detachment.

We would guess this Aviation Unit wore the Ryukyus Command shoulder patch when it was on The Rock.

 

 

And here, a 50s 24th Aviation Company one, Japanese Made described as an oversized one, we guess on the chest of flying gear, jackets, flight suits etc.

TRANS ARCTIC GROUP AVIATION SECTION - Truly, a US Army Cold War Patch.....

Mid 1950 Trans-Arctic Group Aviation Section, Thule, Greenland Arctic Support Force building the DEWLINE network one polar bear at at time.  Looks like a Bell H-13 Sioux helicopter on the left and a De Havilland Beaver above.

A 6th Army HQ Presidio Of San Francisco Aviation Detachment, got a Merrowed Edge, so maybe late 60s into the 70s.

Do believe this is the 3rd Infantry Division Aviation Detachment patch, or at least one of them that was worn in the Korean War period in Korea, there might of been more then one say. Photo from February 1954 during Marylyn Monroe's USO visit.

I would think it is the Brigade Aviation Detachment.

I thought I would share a recent collection I purchased. These were collected during the 1970's by a Colonels son. There were around 1200 patches total. These are the best of the the best, mostly early aviation.
