Original USN Nuclear Task Group '75 - North Atlantic Cruise August-September 1975

USS NIMITZ (CVAN-68) Nuclear Aircraft Carrier, Carrier Air Wing Eight embarked

USS SOUTH CAROLINA (CGN-37) Nuclear Cruiser

USS SEAHORSE (SSN-669) Nuclear Submarine

USS Nimitz and USS South Carolina got underway from Norfolk, VA August 19, 1975 and rendezvoused five days later with USS Seahorse at sea. Nimitz and South Carolina arrived in Norfolk on September 15, 1975. Ports of Call included Wilhelmshaven/Bremerhaven in (then) West Germany; Edinburgh, Scotland, where teams from Nimitz and South Carolina participated in the world-famous Braemer Games; and Portsmouth, England. Exercises were conducted with the West Germans, NATO's Standing Naval Force, and with the Royal Navy and the Royal Air Force, including four RAF F-4s that operated from the Nimitz, in Exercise NIMEX. The November 1975 issue of All Hands covered the cruise in great detail.

USN Cruise Jacket flags

Glad to see they use and wear the First Navy Jack again!! (I put a subdued one on my cap!)

USS FORRESTAL (CV-59) W Division, Keepers of the Nuclear Dragon 1976

W Div!!

When I first reported aboard CVN-73, I went to W Div..(was undesignated Airman Apprentice) but they were in process of disestablishing the WT rate..it was a small berthing (Weps Dept 1st Classes took it over after WT rate went away), and they had 2 magazines, the forward and aft SASS (?) Specially equipped for you know what.. They had a seriously cool rating symbol in my opinion!

us-navy-weapons-technician-wt-patch-16.p

Says rate disbanded in '94..but I recall the last rated WT on board (WT3 Welker was his name) was getting out in 1993, and there were no WTs left on CVN-73, so it was absorbed by Weapons Dept (AOs) Cool guy too..he'd just have us do sweepers in the berthing and head, then post us (me and a guy that became a good friend) for the day! (we were in Newport News in drydock, so nothing really to do!)

Then, the fwd SASS went to G3, and the aft became the home of the SEAL teams we had embarked on our deployments (the flight suit and MP-5 era lol) (berthing was taken by the 1st Classes..it was a sweet one too..with only 20 racks tops..nice and quiet!)

Sorry for the ramble! the W Div brought back some memories!
