johnny12550 Posted June 24, 2017 Share #1 Posted June 24, 2017 Hi, I found another image, but found it difficult to determine if it is Union or Confederate. Could it be Militia? The Soldier is wearing a civilian shirt, so that is why I thought maybe Confederate. I have not seen many images where Union soldiers mix the clothing. Most of the time they are in full uniform, but it they are wearing a civilian shirt, then they have a Union uniform jacket over it. Thanks, John

mjerickson Posted June 26, 2017 Share #3 Posted June 26, 2017 Just a shot in the dark but I believe that the 4th Michigan Infantry was known for wearing plaid shirts.
iron bender Posted June 26, 2017 Share #4 Posted June 26, 2017 Appears to be a nco in the Union army.

Steve Rogers Posted July 3, 2017 Share #6 Posted July 3, 2017 I would hesitate to make a regimental identification merely on the basis of a checked shirt. There are a number of photos out there of 4th Michigan guys, one of which is frequently published that shows a soldier leaning against a tree, wearing a checked shirt with a bowie knife stuck in his belt. This is far from being able to say checked shirts were uncommon or that they were items of uniform in that regiment.
