pfrost Posted October 22, 2008 Share #2 Posted October 22, 2008 Hi, I believe a similar wing was discussed over on the WAF forum about a year ago or so. It was an early USMC related wing, best I can recall. I will try to find that thread again. Patrick
all-bull Posted August 7, 2009 Author Share #3 Posted August 7, 2009 I wanted to put this back on the top. This was IDed on the pinned topic of Rare WWII USMC insignia as "Aircraft 1". Can anyone tell me any information on this, and is that the correct ID? Here is the link: here Mods: You may want to move this to the SSI section, since that is where the pinned topic I mentioned is. Thank you.
Tonomachi Posted August 7, 2009 Share #4 Posted August 7, 2009 I can't remember where I copied this from but as I recall this is a pretty rare USMC wing. This wing might have been offered for sale on ebay at one time which is where I copied these photographs.

all-bull Posted August 19, 2009 Author Share #7 Posted August 19, 2009 Yes, that's why I posted it back on top. Apparently it seems to be a scarce patch, but no one has any definitive history on it that I can find. I've emailed two people at the Marine Corps museum last week, and have still heard no response from them either. This patch also appears here on the forum about the rarest USMS patch(s) RON
vintageproductions Posted August 19, 2009 Share #8 Posted August 19, 2009 Hunter-This is considered the Holy Grail of Marine Corps squadron patches. I want to say it is the first design for Marine Aircraft Squadron One, but I could be a bit off on the exact name. When you want to trade that for a couple of common SVN patches, I am definately there for you. Otherwise I would put this away and keep it safe, as it will definately not decrease in value. all-bull Posted September 4, 2009 Author Share #9 Posted September 4, 2009 The response from the USMC national museum aviation curator: "I was very excited to see the picture of the patch, because I have never seen an example of an Aircraft One patch before! Aircraft One came into being in late 1933 as part of the massive reorganization of the USMC which resulted in the creation of the Fleet Marine Forces. Aircraft One was stationed at Quantico and was comprised of HS-1M (a HQ squadron), SS-1M (the service squadron), VO-7M, VF-9M, VB-6M, and VJ-6M. In May 1939, the aviation assets of the USMC were reorganized again and Aircraft One became the 1st Marine Air Group. I confirmed the logo using Maj John (Jack) Elliott's Vol 1: The Official Monogram US Navy and Marine Corps Color Guide (pg 155). The 1930s were a period of relative "colorfulness" for the USMC and the aircraft often carried unit or group markings (which were reduced and eventually removed prior to WWII). However, the use of patches during this time must have been very limited. There are no such patches in the National Museum of the Marine Corps's collection and I do not believe I have even seen patches appearing in photographs of aircrew from the period. That having been said, Marine aviation was fiercely independent during this time period and if it was willing to violate US Navy regulations on painting its aircraft, I could easily see the uniform regulations being bent to allow for a unit patch!" Finally a good ID for a great patch!
