FC1SW - DESRON12

New member requesting permission to come on board. :-) Wow that brings back a Beirut flashback and many others. I'm new to this forum and served 6 years in the US Navy (Uncle Sam's Canoe Club) as a Fire Control Technician. I was a missile type serving 4-1/2 years on board a guided missile destroyer (DDG) where I worked on the TARTAR surface-to-air and Harpoon surface-to-surface missile systems. I made 3 major, 6 months+ deployments to the Persian Gulf, Beirut and the Med. I was also part of Central America Ops off El Salvador and I was part of the Grenada invasion. In addition my ship spent 8 days performing recovery operations of the Space Shuttle Challenger. We were the closet ship operating near the crash site and the first ship on scene. I achieved the rank of E-6 in 5 years and became Enlisted Surface Warfare Specialist qualified. I am proud of the time I served and everyone who did the same and supports those that do. For the last 7 years I have been extensively researching the USS Mayflower PY-1, the Presidential yacht where my Grandfather began his 34 year enlistment in the US Navy in 1911. I am also researching my Father's early entry into WWII as a Merchant Marine before joining the Army Air Corps which became the US Air Force in 1948 which he made his career in. I also am an avid Native American Indian artifact collector and have been collecting for 40 years now. I look forward to being a part of this forum and learning from its members. Thank you!
