Here is my favorite. WW1 mess kit possibly part of the "Lost Battalion" fame. Never have been able to make a determination on whether or not this man was part of the "Lost Battalion", if not, he certainly was nearby!

Here is the original thread. http://www.usmilitariaforum.com/forums/index.php?/topic/264043-possible-lost-battalion-mess-kit/?hl=%2Blost+%2Bbattalion

Keep the heavy-duty stuff coming in, you guys- we're up to 4 pages already B)

Here is a Map Case made at the Philly Depot that I wasn't aware of; it is pictured in the open position on page141 of "Grunt Gear".

It is below at the left, front and back, beside the one that most of us Marine Corps screwballs..uh, I mean collectors are familiar with.

Difference in the width of the harnesses.

Both produced around the same time. I don't know if these are early and later designs, or just practical experiments.

.

Well things seem to have slowed down over the last few days, so I will try kick-starting the thread again. Here's my Korean period USMC tour jacket, it's a double sided jacket and has a Marine air-wing design on the inside. Wonder how many of these survived, any forum members have one . . . . . . . . .

Got this cool USMC Field Gear Grouping named to Glenn M Stoddard, the canteen has some repairs on it, and the cup has been etched with engravings, the D ring Pack, and the Knapsack has Two Red Squares and Stoddards name painted on the flap of the pack. I found some information on Glenn a couple of nights ago. Stoddard was born November 10 1919 in Carson City Nevada, he was a message center chief (MOS 674) with HQ & Service Battery / 10th Marines through Guadalcanal, Tarawa, Saipan, and Tinian. He was back stateside before Okinawa. After the war Glenn moved to Idaho, and became a Legislator. He currently lives in Blackfoot Idaho, is 97 years old, and still alive, going to try and reach out to him.

(NOTE; THE FIRST AID POUCH IS NOT HIS) ;)

The gear is not rare compared to some of the items already shared, but it is all UNIS marked and named to the same Marine, Sgt. Henry J. Abbott. Abbott served with 3/7 for Guadalcanal and Cape Gloucester, receiving the Silver Star for actions during the latter.

He later went on to serve with 1/23, which the gear is marked for.

Adding to Ken's share in post #32, while not an amazing Airborne PT shirt, but rather a pair of AAF marked PT shorts. Haven't been able to find another pair marked in this manner, but would love to see one. This came as part of a group to a 8th AAF vet who was taken prisoner.

More of the group here - http://www.usmilitariaforum.com/forums/index.php?/topic/241118-pow-grouping-8th-army-air-force/

This is an awesome topic. Love reading the posts. One of my rarest pieces. A 1943 named Ethocel canteen. Been looking for one of these for a long time a finally got the opportunity with an amazing story. There is an old school army navy store near where I work in Norfolk, Va and I love going in and digging. A car recently crashed into the building and dislodged this canteen set and many other items. Article link below.

https://pilotonline.com/news/local/history/article_2c93dee9-3c87-56e3-94c7-02f96b87b9a9.html

It is also named to a Louis W. Schwindt who from my little research so far was a Pharmasist Mate 1/c on a USCG manned LST. Found his name on a roster from LST-16 which apparently took part in the invasion of Normandy. Anyway, my small contribution. Thanks for creating this topic.

General Apathy

.

This has always been one of my favorite pieces of WWII equipment bring an unusual piece, unused gas mask for a dog, in it's original marked carton, with supple rubberized carrying bag, and five page pamphlet, all dated 1944.

Whoa!

.

Hi Garandomatic, if that Whoa comment was intended for the Dog Gas Mask I posted, then Thank you. ;)

A few people on the forum know that I refer to items in my collection as being from the shoebox so this piece is allied to that shoebox being a US Army shoe sizing kit. this is an even more esoteric piece of US army equipment but a vitally important piece as an army really does march on it's feet and needs comfortable fitting boots.

The equipment measures sizes from 5 to 15 plus the half sizes and in six width's, that's a phenomenal amount of footwear to be carrying around following up behind the troops as the advance. Considering all the other pieces of equipment a soldier requires then the quartermaster carrying the quantities and fulfilling those needs was extraordinary.

Maybe not one item but group of items which make a nice set for late war USN/USMC aviator.

1)AN6519 life vest but rigger reinforced by added a rubber patches at the front. This idea was mentioned in Naval Aviation News from 1945 year.

2)WW2 USN shark chaser.

3)M566b dye markers but also reinforced by added a heavy grey canvas at the back to avoid a accident split the materials(they are a little but invisible because are at the back side of life vest).

4)Rigger made pouch for very's projector with six red shells and two O2 cartridge for life vest. Kit would be sewed to flight suit or possibly attached to the life vest by tie tapes from dye marker. This idea of the kit was also mentioned in 1945 Naval Aviation News from 1945 year.

5)Standard survival light but with nice custom painted red lense.

6)Standard USN whistle with white cord, dated 1944.

7)USN aviator first aid kit.

Enjoy,

Jerry

It definitely was meant for the gas mask... That and the sizer have got to be some of the hardest to find things yet just because they're probably not the most thought of.

I really like the look of that life vest kit, too, jerry.
