ASMIC Military Collectors Show in Kansas City on 8 Sept 2017

Recommended Posts

I had a great show! :D

One of my friends picked up one of only three Cavalry DIs that he needed to complete his collection so there was some wonderful stuff to be found at this show.

I picked up quite a few little items, from buttons to badges, that I was looking for and found some really scarce goodies that I was not expecting to find. I also won First Place for my US Army M1902 Saber display so a super show all around for me.

I got there about 10am on Saturday, but there was still quite a bit to see.

I really was impressed with this Multinational Force & Observers collection, displayed by a veteran of the same organization.

The ASMIC show is not just about uniforms, patches and badges. This was an unexpected display of ammo boxes and associated machine gun hardware. The .30 cal is a functional semi-automatic that functions with a crank handle like a gatling gun!

More photos to come... check back later.

Just returned to New York tonight. Great displays and meet some new friends and had some interesting conversations concerning all sorts perspectives on world events. Want to tank all that stopped by to say hello and thank those that found items to purchase.

Very surprised no one mentioned Q39 for BBQ;went two nights in a row and waiting in line was worth wait. Try the Brisket platter with sliced brisket and burnt ends and side of pinto beans with burnt ends.

After a visit to the WWI museum and Jacks Stack BBQ I finally made it home to Minneapolis at midnight yesterday. Still recovering from a long weekend of excitement and insignia. This is probably my best buying show in a long time. Found some killer pieces, some great bargains and even a few variations I needed. Can't wait until Dayton next year!

Didn't anyone else take photos of the show and displays?

Full WWI uniform on display. The item in his arm is a French flag that looked to be about as old as the uniform. The owner also had the WWII flight jacket belonging to the officer's son.

This was a fun display about the "Golden Age" of post WWII military collecting. This was back when you sent for patches off of mail order lists for 45 cents each, or you could hit up your neighbors and family members for their souvenirs.

On the down side, there were few references available. The ASMIC Trading Post was all the more important back then.

Golden era patch order lists and order blanks. This was a life line for young collectors. Most of this was tossed away.

I think focused collections are often the most interesting. These belong to a collector who has doggedly sought out the Run For Your Life patches from the late Cold War. Some of these were truly unique, such as the rare one from the Berlin Brigade.

For those not familiar with this program, it was a self managed fitness program that gave out patches and other incentives for the miles run. This was decades before the running craze that we have today.

Speaking of focused collections, Jim McDuff has brought out his collection of Vietnam era Engineer insignia before, but it is always impressive.

I don't remember seeing the Jungle Fatigue Jacket that he wore before, but even if I did I did not realize all of the insignia were Ken Nolan iron on insignia.

I asked Jim about this, because even his name was done this way. He replied you could order stencils of your name as well as everything else.

The problem was... these iron on insignia tended to fade. He said he wore this one couple of times and after it began to fade he packed it away. It really is a very unique example.
