blitz67 Posted May 15, 2017 Share #1 Posted May 15, 2017 I found this short(30") cutlass type sword today, the blade looks hand forged to the handle, no markings I believe it is Civil War era, has anyone ever seen one of these? Thanks for the help and please tell me it is a rare confederate cutlass!!!

illinigander Posted June 8, 2017 Share #3 Posted June 8, 2017 Does the tip of the blade look like it was shortened? Looks like a cut down m/1860 cavalry sabre to me? Illinigander
swmdo Posted June 8, 2017 Share #4 Posted June 8, 2017 Yep I think that is an unmarked confederate Calvary saber. Nice find. According to my handbook of confederate swords many of the confederate swords were crude and unmarked and tried to mimic the u.s. Issued swords. Much like the rifles they made crude imitations. sundance Posted June 8, 2017 Share #5 Posted June 8, 2017 That's an interesting tang. It certainly looks like a blade was married to a hilt from a different sword. Oh, and just so you feel better, it's clearly Confederate (as if I'd know).
