Dirk Posted May 9, 2017 Share #1 Posted May 9, 2017 I don't know much about these. A early Navy Sharpshooters badge to a Gunboat Marine assigned to various posts in Asia. The Muster Rolls show him in 1908-09 on the Gunboat USS Wilmington and receiving this badge for the target year 1908. Badge is maker marked to "The Hoag Brothers Co." Looks like he bounced around a number of posts in the PI as well. When he joined the Marines he shows up as a young apprentice, then became a drummer and went to sea. It looks like at some point he left the Service before returning to become a lifer. The badge is engravered to him. Why he got this badge vice a Marine sharpshooters badge I am not sure but it is nice to add one to the collection.

Dirk Posted May 10, 2017 Author Share #4 Posted May 10, 2017 Thanks guys! Wish I knew more about these early badges. Did an online search and several sites disagree when they were authorized or discontinued.
