Was it common place to xxxx out an existing name and put another soldiers name onto a tag during the 1st world war?

I have one like this..

Thanks

Sean

Are you sure it was the soldiers name that was X'd out. At first they put the soldiers unit on the tags and then later X'd them out for safty. Are you sure it's not the unit that is X'd out?

Here's my tag. Notice the name is around the edge then his Unit information was X'd out in the middle.

It definitely looks like the tags are his, just later in the war his unit information was X'd out in the middle. I like the messy look of it, shows the letters were hand stamped and "personalized" instead of machined. Nice tag.

Awesome info...fast, When I was 10 or eleven on a Saturday my parents had went to a yard sale that was listed in the Atlanta journal I had called and the Lady had said she had set it aside, found his ID tag in his gas mask bag along with mask and repair kit, he had inscribed his name on the Bag and also the pistol belt...got his Helmet also, but it is unmarked as I recall... Talked to him briefly on the phone! Many Thanks

Sean
