HSL-49 DET-1 SCORPIONS - PIGS WITH WINGS

Flight Hogs - First Deployment Desert Storm 91 aboard USS FORD (FFG-54)

post-2322-0-93085500-1555271732.jpg

Hawaii - Philippines - Bahrain - Mauritius - India - Thailand - Diego Garcia

HSM-49 was redesignated on 1 April 2015, formerly being Helicopter Anti-Submarine Squadron Light 49 (HSL-49). HSL-49 was established on 23 March 1990 as the U.S. Navy transitioned the Helicopter Anti-Submarine Light community from the SH-2 Seasprite to the SH-60B Seahawk. The Scorpions first deployed in November 1990 with Detachment 1 embarked in USS Ford (FFG-54).

The squadron - then and now - deploys its personnel and aircraft in an expeditionary model. Detachments are led by an Officer-in-Charge, normally a Lieutenant Commander, and typically deploy with one or two helicopters, and a complement of pilots, Naval Aircrewmen, mechanics and technicians.

SH-3H SEA KING - ATTACK DON'T TRACK

post-2322-0-60948300-1556486147.jpg

SH-3H - Upgrade of the SH-3G as an anti-submarine warfare (ASW) helicopter for the U.S. Navy. It included SH-3G features with improvements for ASW, anti-ship missile detection and other airframe improvements. 163 SH-3A/D/Gs were upgraded to SH-3H configuration

The Sea King became operational with the United States Navy in June 1961. During the 1990s, the Sea King was replaced in the ASW and SAR roles by the U.S. Navy with the newer Sikorsky SH-60 Sea Hawk. However, the SH-3 continued to operate in reserve units in roles including logistical support, search and rescue, and transport. On 27 January 2006, the SH-3 was ceremonially retired at NAS Norfolk, Virginia, by Helicopter Combat Support Squadron 2 (HC-2)

On July 1, 1960 Helicopter Utility Squadron Four (HU-4) "Black Stallions" was established at NAS Lakehurst, New Jersey, and tasked with the logistic support of non-aviation ships of the U.S. Atlantic Fleet. To describe its mission more accurately, the squadron was redesignated as Helicopter Combat Support Squadron Four in July 1965, and HC-4 was born. The unit was equipped with the Kaman UH-2A Seasprite light transport helicopter.....

.....Austin again deployed with PhibRon 2 on 16 November. During the cruise, Austin held numerous amphibious and antisubmarine warfare exercises. She also visited Genoa, Livorno, and Naples, Italy, Barcelona and Rota, Spain, Mersin, Turkey, and Athens, Greece. On 7 May 1971, Austin ended the cruise at Norfolk.

HSL-31 ARCH ANGELS - Helicopter Anti-Submarine Squadron Light 31

NAS North Island, NAS Imperial Beach, NOLF Ream Field 1972 to 1992

post-2322-0-75144300-1576975531.jpg

US made embroidered patch circa 1972. Note the Lamp of Learning denoting HSL-31's status as a helicopter training unit.

On September 1st 1967, HC-1 was splitted in several new units. One of those was a LAMPS training unit for the SH-2 Seasprite helicopter designated Helicopter Combat Support Squadron Five ( HC-5 ). On March 1972, HC-5 became HSL-31. Archangels used tail code TD
