MattS Posted May 3, 2017 Share #4 Posted May 3, 2017 Not sure about the markings, but that looks like a post-1947 USAF officer's eagle. Could be 1950-60s USAF issue.
Bob Hudson Posted May 3, 2017 Share #5 Posted May 3, 2017 Did MIL SPEC get used before the late 1940's? The earliest reference I recall is on G-1 flight jackets and I think that was about 1950-52. There is no government contract number on these so it appears to be made for the civilian or private purchase market and the MIL SPEC number indicates that it is made to the same specs as one made under government contract. cerick1450 Posted May 5, 2017 Author Share #6 Posted May 5, 2017 Thank you for the help. Not sure when mil spec came into use, but I think you are correct..post war.
MattS Posted May 5, 2017 Share #7 Posted May 5, 2017 I found this photo online of USAF personnel in the 1950s wearing tan pith helmets like the one posted.
doyler Posted May 5, 2017 Share #8 Posted May 5, 2017 I have had the sun helmets dated in the 60s To me the word Trooper points toward a commercially made item that was available for purchase. The spec could mean nothing more than it met mil specs. MattS Posted May 5, 2017 Share #9 Posted May 5, 2017 I agree, the army was still issuing these early on in Vietnam. In fact, they still appear here and there in the military today...
