I have a January 1943 ship's newspaper from the U S Army Transport USS Tjisadane which contains an article about a squadron of 24 Flight Nurses aboard said to be the first to be deployed overseas. The nurses were to be attached to a troop carrier command and fly replacements to combat zones then evacuate the wounded and ill.

The ship was bound for Noumea, New Caledonia and the other passengers included the U S Army XIV Corps Headquarters staff which had been organized at Camp Bowie Texas from elements of VIII Corps. MG Alexander M Patch, already at Guadalcanal with the Americal Division, assumed command of XIV Corps.
