hhbooker2 Posted October 17, 2008 #1 Posted October 17, 2008 "GREETINGS & SALUTATIONS!" The first medal that I know of issued by the United States was the 1879-1882 JeanetteArtic Expedition Medal. The inscription on the reverse read: "In commenoration of perils encountered and as an expression of the high esteem in which Congress holds his services. Act Approved September 30, 1890." The ribbon is white silk with a bar above with the name "JEANETTE" below a North American Bald Eagle. The obverse shows a dog-sled with native Alaskan Indians and an ice-bound sailing ship. The Stryker Frame shows the Jeanette Artic Expedtion Medal as well as these medals: The United States Antartic Expedition (1939 1941), Byrd Antartic Expedition (1928 1930) in bronze, silver, and gold, Byrd Antartic Expedition (1933 1935), and the Peary-Polar Expedition (1905-1909). If you have pictures of other similiar medals for the United States Coast Guard or United States Navy, please feel free to display them here as well! Thank you!
