Hello as I am new here. I apologize for any possible missteps I may make posting. I recently came across a picture of what appeared to be an 1885 artillery jacket labeled as an 1884. But it had pre-1885 rank insignia on it. Firstly was it an 1885 jacket and secondly. Would it be at all plausible that an 1885 jacket still retained older rank stripes. Thank you for any info. post-167962-0-80280100-1492839217.jpgpost-167962-0-62242700-1492839236_thumb.jpg

Hi! Yes, the 1872 ranks (here an artillery corporal) continued to be used for many years -- in the case of artillery units, far longer than other types-through somewhere around 1911.

Thanks. Good to know. A site had this jacket listed as an 1884 jacket. But I thought otherwise. I recently acquired an 1885 that had been disassembled for theatrical purposes so I'm looking restore it somewhat. After seeng that pic I opted to grab the rank stripes. And the 1872 are decidedly cheaper than the 1885 gold trimmed. Thanks for the info. Much obliged.
