usaf70 Posted April 7, 2017 #1 Posted April 7, 2017 Does anyone recognize this wing whether military or civil? It is approx. 1 3/4", sterling with maker mark that is hard to make out. Any information is appreciated.
rustywings Posted April 7, 2017 #2 Posted April 7, 2017 I believe your small wing is a sweetheart piece made for airplane mechanics and ground personnel in the 1920's and 30's. Not authorized by the Army Air Corps, but apparently available to both military and civilian mechanics alike. I know of at least three variations to this small winged radial engine design. I think that apple hallmark on the reverse represents Apple Co. or Appleton Co.?
TCSchultz Posted January 24 #4 Posted January 24 I recently came across a similar wings badge that is sterling with an applied single prop that was engraved as shown and in researching it I came across this previous post so thought I'd add photos of mine. The engraved letters are hard to make out but could be initials for someone so not sure their relevant to it's issue or award. Same size as the one shown above as well with pinback closure and no maker marks noted.
5thwingmarty Posted January 24 #5 Posted January 24 I believe these were offered for sale in many of the Karl Ort catalogs.
pfrost Posted January 24 #6 Posted January 24 I believe that this Karl Ort catalog dates from the 40's or 50's
