I wanted to share this 1803 British infantry officer saber made by Osborn & Gunby that I picked up recently at an estate sale. While it is definitely English made, I'm unsure if this one was used by the US military in the early 19th century. The sword dates to between 1808 - 1821 (the time during which Henry Osborn and John Gunby were partners), and the spine of the blade is marked "OSBORN & GUNBY'S Warranted." It has a lion's head pommel, with a brass D guard, and a leather/wire grip. The blade is marked with star and oak cluster motifs, some of which appear to be gilded with gold or gold paint. It blade measures approximately 29." The sword came with the original leather scabbard, including the original brass upper/lower hooks, locket (with frog stud), and chape. The scabbard's brass locket is engraved "LOWTHER 59 Charing Cross London." The blade is ornate and not nicked, so I am guessing that this might have been an officer's dress sword. I wanted to share this with the community. But I'm not an expert on swords, so if anyone has any information on this model/maker it would be welcomed, or if I have given any incorrect information please correct me.
