VC-84 | USS Makin Island (CVE-93)

Established 6 Jan 1944. Disestablished 17 Sep 1945

Deployed on the USS Makin Island (CVE-93) 10 Nov 1944 - 5 Jun 1945

Action included combat air patrol and anti-submarine patrol and close air support (bombing, strafing, napalming specific targets on the ground) during battles at Luzon, Leyte, Iwo Jima and Okinawa. FM-2 Wildcat and TBM-3 Avenger

This patch (decal on 6" leather round) was included in an IDed grouping I was fortunate to acquire some years ago.

Hi Jerry,

My dad flew in VC-84. Robert Hooks. I have the squadron patch too. I would love to see anything additional you have about VC-84. Thank you, Brian Hooks

I remember the binocs as a kid. Wish I knew where they got too! I’ve got a piece of a zero wing that my dad cut out on Okinawa. I’ve posted it on the VC-84 grouping that JDK has. All the best, Brian

Resurrecting this thread, as I have just come upon this, attached to VC-84.  Trying to find some more information.  I apologize for any "hi-jacking".  Thanks!

Wow - non typical knife for aviators :) but of course saw some similar examples in the past.

With some help from Cadet, I was able to positively ID the owner.  Charlie Dwyer ACMM

World is small. My friend has a grouping included a medals named to Glenn F. Cota which was also in VC-84. He is visible on the roster as well.

I really enjoy reading VC84 info. My grandfather flew a FM2 Wildcat in VC84. Boru and myself have chatted on the phone. His dad and my grandfather flew some missions together. I was able to track my grandfathers steps from when he joined to when he was discharged. Anyone with any good info please share, thank you.
