KASTAUFFER Posted October 15, 2008 Share #1 Posted October 15, 2008 I just picked up these patches in a large grouping to a Naval Aviator that flew in both WWII and Korea. I thought you might enjoy them. He flew with VT-34 ( Torpedo Squadron 34 ) during WWII on the USS Monterey . This is the same ship President Gerald Ford served on. During the Korean War he served on the USS Bataan in 1952 and later with VF-194 on the USS Boxer in 1953.
KASTAUFFER Posted October 15, 2008 Author Share #2 Posted October 15, 2008 The patch on the left is a VT-34 patch from WWII. It is cotton twill with cheesecloth backing. The patch on the right is from VF-194 " The Yellow Devils" circa 1953 and is all machine sewn. Both are 5 inches across.
KASTAUFFER Posted October 15, 2008 Author Share #3 Posted October 15, 2008 The next 3 patches are all from the Korean War from the USS Bataan and the USS Boxer. VF-194 was part of " Air Task Group 1 " on the USS Boxer in 1953 . The other 2 patches are ships patches. All are machine sewn . The largest, the USS Bataan patch, is 5 inches across at the top. Once I have some more time, I will post more of this group. It is a very extensive archive of his service. Kurt
KASTAUFFER Posted October 15, 2008 Author Share #4 Posted October 15, 2008 I had to add this too! This a yellow silk flying scarf that each member of his squadron also had. Each scarf was individualized. I have a photo of the pilots of VF-194 on the deck of the USS Boxer wearing the scarves.

KurtA Posted October 17, 2008 Share #10 Posted October 17, 2008 Thanks Kurt! Which patches look Japanese made to you? Kurt Kurt- It's kind of difficult to tell from the photos, but I think the only U.S. made one is the first one - Torpedo 34 (which is a GREAT patch.). All the rest appear Japanese-made. Perhaps the Air Task Group 1 is U.S.-made, but I can't tell from the photo. Whatever they are, they're all outstanding patches. Kurt

dad1st99 Posted March 18, 2013 Share #13 Posted March 18, 2013 Dear Kurt, My Father in Law, who was second seat in an AD Sky Raider was a member of the Yellow Devils in the Korean war. His original flight jacket was stolen and he has been able to replace the jacket and several patches and bars, but we have been unable to find the patch, which you are showing on this page which depicts a yellow devil, on a black spade with a RED rocket. Dad will be celebrating his 80th birthday soon and I am searching high and low for a patch such as this. I have been able to find similar patches, that are reproductions, but they have a yellow rocket. If you would be able to assist me with finding the red rocket version, or guiding me to a company that sells them, I would be greatly appreciative. wmd5481 Posted December 31, 2013 Share #14 Posted December 31, 2013 My father was a member of VT-34 during WW-II. He was the radio operator and tail gunner. He has one of the patches of VT34 as you have. It's cool to see the one you have posted. He was shot down after a run over Tokyo. All three crew members lived and are still living. He had some very cool stories as I'm sure all of that generation did, does. God bless them all. Thanks for sharing. TDoty
