boonicootza Posted March 27, 2017 Share #1 Posted March 27, 2017 This was for sale on eBay, I didn't get it. What is it exactly? It should be 20th SFG, but as far as I know there was never a 5th Battalion. The seller didn't post a picture with the sleeve tag but said it was "Guidon Special Forces, Special Forces Group, Contract #9234, 8345-918-0649, DSA -DPSC- Dir of MFG"

nirvana Posted March 30, 2017 Share #3 Posted March 30, 2017 I googled the hell out of this flag. From what I can tell, there was a 5th battalion that was active in (at least) the 1970s. It was located in Maryland, and was part of the ANG there. I'm the guy that got the seller to post the information about the tags, and I believe very much that it's an original guidon with original unit markings. I can't imagine someone marking a real flag, using the correct font, it to a unit that never existed, but I guess that it could happen? Anyhow, I won it. I paid more than I wanted to, but I've never seen another SF guidon for sale before. I'll post up some pics when it arrives. See the attached bio of a general who served in this unit, giving it some proof of life. I found another similar reference or two. One page that I found gave me the impression that they *might* have done psyop stuff, but that's just a shadow of a guess. Don't quote me on that bit. boonicootza Posted March 30, 2017 Author Share #4 Posted March 30, 2017 I managed to find some more info: This guy was Commander, Company A 5th Battalion, 20th Special Forces Group, Dec 1975 – Jan 1978 https://www.linkedin.com/in/williambache/Maybe he can tell you more about the unit. Anyway, great guidon! Did you get the other one?
nirvana Posted March 30, 2017 Share #5 Posted March 30, 2017 Thank you. It's a neat pieces. And the info: There we go, he and Johnson served together. I may reach out, although I'm betting that he will be a bit confused. Haha I bid on the other flag but didn't win it. I already have a "branch immaterial" guidon that I paid $40 for, so I wasn't going to throw $120 at another. Unless a flag is cheap or interesting, I'm starting to pass on them. I don't need 10 artillery flags, for example.
