General Apathy Posted March 26, 2017 Share #1 Posted March 26, 2017 . Its reported that Donald Burgett died 23 march 2017 aged 91. Don served with A Co., 506th PIR., 101st DIV., during WWII Below is a photograph of Don signing my copy of ' Rendezvous with Destiny ' here in Normandy 2014. He will be sadly missed by many people, and lots of people from here in Normandy, friends he made over the many years he visited. .

1canpara Posted March 26, 2017 Share #4 Posted March 26, 2017 So very sad. I've read his books also, and had the honour and pleasure of meeting him once in person. RIP Mr. Burgett.

Brian Keith Posted April 7, 2017 Share #9 Posted April 7, 2017 Aww.. Nuts! Sorry to hear this. I met him two different times. He did programs for two museum's I'm associated with, one a veteran's history museum and believe it or not the other an art museum! He gave my daughter a piece of camo parachute material he said was from his D-Day parachute. She was so moved she was in tears, the good kind of tears. I told him that as a father, that was OK that he made my daughter cry. Yes, she still has the material. I wear the 101st shoulder sleeve insignia as one of my "combat" patches, but I didn't earn it like he did. Rest in Peace, Don, you've fought the good fight! Thank-You for taking your time with a young teen age girl to share your experiences with. I don't know if she ever thought about what you said to her when her father was serving in Afghanistan a few years later, but you came home from war and so did I. 38Driver Posted April 7, 2017 Share #10 Posted April 7, 2017 Read "Currahee" for the first time as a 10 year old in one of my mom's Reader's Digest Condensed books back in the late 60s. I've read it a hundred time since. My GI Joes were Don Burgett. Sadly there is no stopping this time business. He lived a helluva life and made an impression on a lot of people. Can't really ask for more than that. Rest in Peace sir!
mikie Posted April 7, 2017 Share #11 Posted April 7, 2017 Sad to see another legend pass away into history. I read Currahee for the first time last year, inspired by posts on this forum. I check new content on this site daily, but strange that I'm only seeing this post for the first time today. Rest in peace, sir.

63 RECON Posted April 17, 2019 Share #13 Posted April 17, 2019 Bit of a late post, when I was into ww2 Airborne stuff in the 90s as a kid (I still take a keen interest, just don't collect it) Currahee by Don Burgett was the first book on ww2 airborne I bought and read. I loved it, so I found Dons address someplace and wrote him a nice letter telling him how much i liked his books and how cool he was and that i would like to request an autographed picture. A few weeks later I got one in the mail, that he had signed and addressed to me, using my nickname. I thought I'd lost the pic after all these years but it was in a box of books that have made a few moves. cheers for looking.
BILL THE PATCH Posted April 17, 2019 Share #14 Posted April 17, 2019 That's awesome, is it original photo or a copy? Not that it matters just curious. Sent from my Moto G (5) Plus using Tapatalk
63 RECON Posted April 18, 2019 Share #15 Posted April 18, 2019 The picture is a scan, but its a real signature, I cant still faintly see the indents from the pen. It spent a while in a frame with my collection but the last 10 or so years within the books pages.
