Steve Brannan Posted March 23, 2017 Share #1 Posted March 23, 2017 I have a very large Sub Dolphins insignia. 21.5" wide and 6" tall. Weighs 7 lbs. 2 ounces and appears to be made of cast brass. From estate of a WW2 Sub Commander. My guess is it custom made for him from melted down 40mm brass. Has two threaded holes on the back to fasten it to a wall or sign. I have attached it to a grad board to display in my office. Anyone else seen one of these large dolphins?
Owen Posted March 23, 2017 Share #2 Posted March 23, 2017 Yes, I bought one at a gun show in Mobile last DEC. It was presenter to USS Drum, part of Battleship Memorial Park.
Steve Brannan Posted March 24, 2017 Author Share #3 Posted March 24, 2017 Very interesting. This one turned up in Birmingham, Alabama. I was in the Navy in the 60s and we still shot 40mm brass shells from WW2. I was told some of the ships off Vietnam would save up their brass casings and trade them in Hong Kong to get the hull of the ships painted by the locals. Sometimes brass shells were melted and molded into different decorative nautical items by the repair ships. I thought maybe this type dolphin might have been made on a Submarine Tender, but I am just guessing.
