WWII Mattock Question

I picked(pun intended)up a mattock at an antique shop which sported a "battleship" gray paint. Dated 1944. The unpainted handle was stamped "US". Wonderful condition.

Were these issued to the navy at any point. Or, did the Marines have gray ones? Or, simply a paint color someone had on hand to paint it?

The Navy did use them as shore patrol equipment. But you have to ask yourself why would they paint them gray if the only use for it is on the ground.

Maybe, " If it don't move, paint it" mentality"? I have no idea really. Nice tough paint job, though. Guess I'll keep it that way for awhile.

Thanks.
