CombatEng44 Posted March 13, 2017 Share #1 Posted March 13, 2017 I picked(pun intended)up a mattock at an antique shop which sported a "battleship" gray paint. Dated 1944. The unpainted handle was stamped "US". Wonderful condition. Were these issued to the navy at any point. Or, did the Marines have gray ones? Or, simply a paint color someone had on hand to paint it? robinb Posted March 13, 2017 Share #2 Posted March 13, 2017 The Navy did use them as shore patrol equipment. But you have to ask yourself why would they paint them gray if the only use for it is on the ground.
CombatEng44 Posted March 14, 2017 Author Share #3 Posted March 14, 2017 Maybe, " If it don't move, paint it" mentality"? I have no idea really. Nice tough paint job, though. Guess I'll keep it that way for awhile. Thanks.
