sarge62436 Posted March 8, 2017 Share #1 Posted March 8, 2017 I added a set of Specialist 3rd class through Master Specialist to my collection today. While reviewing the insignia side-by-side, I noted that the length of the insignia increases with the higher ranks, yet the Specialist 8 (female personnel, 1959-1965) is physically shorter than the Master Specialist insignia. LTC Emerson mentions the insignia width specifications in "Chevrons" (page 200) without comment re: insignia length. I found this interesting and am posting for the benefit of anyone interested in the Specialist insignia variations. Photo follows:
hardstripe Posted March 8, 2017 Share #2 Posted March 8, 2017 Chevrons were made by many different manufacturers. I have noticed slight variations in width and length from two otherwise identical rank chevrons. Not a big deal and so common that I don't collect these variations. The Army green uniform was adopted in 1957 and was in use until Jan 1, 2015. Just think of how many millions of Army Green chevrons were produced in that time. sarge62436 Posted March 8, 2017 Author Share #3 Posted March 8, 2017 Thanks for the reply Hardstripe - I agree that manufacture variations are definitely a factor.
Teamski Posted March 9, 2017 Share #4 Posted March 9, 2017 Remember that the merrowed version of this rank was worn well into the 1970's, so you can't really make a comparison between that and the earlier 1950's era cut edged rank. I think this thread should go into the rank and ratings section. -Ski
