DUI on VN Jacket Photo

This might be a tough task. I do know he served with the 9th ID and obviously as shown, the II Field Force.

I got a 77th Artillery dui with this group, which kind of looks like the same shape. The 6/77 field artillery was attached to the II Field Force and then the 9th ID. I'm guessing that's whom he was part of at the time of this ceremony.

Somewhat common in the 68-71 period Longhorn, but almost exclusively worn at base. DIs even Patch Type Crests could be seen on either pocket flap, sometimes even on boonie caps.

Got the picture in the mail. Confirmed 77th FA. And it says the photo was taken in Can Tho, 1969.

Cool. As much as I think I've seen I can't recall seeing DUIs being worn on the jungle jacket like that.

Okay, I'm going to completely make up something. But, what if he wore the insignia to show where the 77th FA awardees started? He was the warrant officer of the unit at Can Tho.

Guys, as mentioned, this wearing of unit DIs in Vietnam was a somewhat common fad from the late-ish war period on, that's official unit crests, not in country designed stuff. It was simply another way of showing unit pride, it this case Battalion pride. There was precedent for this, in the Korea War soldiers of the 27th Infantry wore their DIs on fatiques, and in the line, and later, the trenches, David Hackworth when he was in the Wolfhounds in 50-51 mentioned this in his autobiography, plus I seen a foto taken in 52-53 as well once, maybe I still got the book it was in.

 

In Vietnam however, it was more of a base camp thing when done, but I wouldn't be surprised one bit if I seen a GI of a Grunt unit out in the bush in 69-71 with one on someplace on his uniform

An Officer of the 9th Infantry Div's 709th Maintenance Battalion, Dong Tam 1969, more over, he also wears, the 9th Div Patch Type Crest, and the ARVN Ordnance Corps badge.

The first photo like these I ever noticed was the one I just bought in a 9th ID grouping. Then, as I looked on different websites, it just started popping out everywhere.

 

Always something new for me to learn with this hobby.

Remember when I said in one of my quotes that I wouldn't be surprised if a unit DI turned up somewhere on a uniform on a GI in combat! Well I found one such example. A GI of the 1st Bn 26th Inf 1st Inf Div sometime in 1969.
