kcmo Posted March 1, 2017 Share #1 Posted March 1, 2017 All, I wanted to honor Daniel F. Hilliard who perished a little over 74 years ago with 671 other Sailors, Soldiers, and Civilians when the USAT Dorchester was sunk by U-223 enroute to Greenland. This vessel well known for the story of the four chaplains. PVT Hillard was from Montgomery, Indiana and enlisted on August 26, 1942. According to his enlistment record, he was a 41 year old private with 4 years of college under his belt. RIP PVT Hilliard There are several other posts on the forum with great detail on the USAT Dorchester for those interested in the story.
northcoastaero Posted March 1, 2017 Share #2 Posted March 1, 2017 Nice medal and framed document to honor Pvt Hilliard. I hope to visit some of the local memorials that are dedicated to The Four Chaplains. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/SS_Dorchester https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Four_Chaplains#Chapels_and_sanctuaries

bellasilva Posted March 1, 2017 Share #4 Posted March 1, 2017 Very nice. I own a dog tag to a soldier whose brother perished on the Dorchester. The surviving brother went on to serve in 4 campaigns in Italy and France, and was inducted one month after his brother was killed.
