patches Posted February 27, 2017 Share #4 Posted February 27, 2017 It's the late-sh version, early ones, the ones from the 20s 50s for this unit, lack the shoulder patch of the AMERICAL, this was added to the DI some time in the 50s (date unknown) for this units service in the AMERICAL Division in WWII out in the Pacific, it's amended again in 1973, October, when the scroll is added. Patchcollector Posted February 27, 2017 Author Share #5 Posted February 27, 2017 Thanks for the examples!Looks like mine would be best described as a mid term design, the one with the motto being the late (modern) design.I was thinking it was probably from the 50's(or therabouts),as they are pinbacks. That's right yours is a 50s version, on the back of the version I posted like yours has a post 1954 pre 1965 code, Martin Kahn Bronx NY 6K. Since yours is on a Gemsco card, it should have Gemsco A.G.O. G2 hallmark (note for some reason Gemsco has it,s code the opposite of the others in this period, IE, the letter before the number), if not, just GEMSCO NY by itself which would be a hold over from their earlier hallmark , or GEMSCO in a wreath. JMcCulloch Posted May 16, 2021 Share #7 Posted May 16, 2021 I read in an ASMIC article that the Americal shield was added in 1947/48 and the motto added in 1967? older insignia continued to be worn for a while before the contract pieces were issued. Now that the TIOH is up again, yes, it gives a 4 August 1948 date for the Americal Division patch, and a 21 June 1968 date for the Scroll. In James Sawicki's Infantry Lineage book gives a 25 October 1973 date, an Amendment date, that's why we think the scroll was added. Amendments normally means when a charge is added or something on the unit crest is changed, usually subtly, so not sure what the 1973 amendment is for, maybe a conformation of the 1968 addition?
