Greetings Mark Yes the white horizontal lines on the back are typical of modern computer generated embroidery.Hope this helps.

A question about the white tongue patch. Is it a manufacturer change, an anomaly or, as I have seen in this forum, made for pathfinders?

The idea that the white tongue was made for pathfinders is laughable. They are simply a manufacturer's variation. When Mark Bando began typing 101st SSI, he based the numbering system on most common being a "1" and then going up to type 10. Type 11 and above were ID'd as post WWII.

 

Had he typed these patches based on manufacture date, the OD bordered SSI would have been the first, and the white tongue examples would have been subsequent to that. After the initial runs of patches, the specifications on the patch were changed with the tongue being specified as red. The first drawings were black and white (with the tongue being white) and no specification was made for the color of the tongue- hence they were made white. Of course, lots of these white tongues were stitched over with red thread, painted or inked red by the soldiers who wore them.
