Appears to be an Invasion or Embarkation marking as commonly seen during the Normandy Campaign. I have seen duffle bags, packs, and Jerry Cans marked this way, but rarely field gear. I have a canteen cover painted this way in green and white stripes. Very nice piece.

There might be someone who can determine the unit.

@63 recon, thank you very much for your post and the rich informations I have found.

I guess it won't be easy to find the right meaning for this sign.

No worries at all, i find it interesting even though its not my area of collecting.

Even though your number isn't listed it should be traceable as a forum member med-dept runs med-dept.com and has done heaps of work on this subject, I merely used his info. :)

you will see on this page there is some POM numbers starting with 48, I'm not sure if that may be the same unit as yours but its a start.

Hi guys,

I'm just picking this thread up after a few years of inactivity with some exciting news. After years of research in archives around the world, I'm pleased to say that Chad Phillips and I can announce that our new book "Destination: Victory", containing approximately 17,000 Unit Serial Numbers (POM codes) for US troops in the ETO will be available late Summer 2024. This will be the first in a series of books concerning movement codes and markings used by Allied troops during World War II.

You can find more about it on the book's Facebook page:

https://www.facebook.com/destination.victory.book

You can also signup for notifications when the book is ready via the website:

Thank you,

Ben.

We're pleased to announce that the first volume of Destination: Victory is now available to pre-order via our dedicated website.

The book is 402 pages, and includes the history of the CMRU issued Unit Serial Number, as well as more than 17,000 Unit Serial Numbers, and over 200 original photographs and artifacts. The Unit Serial Number was most famously used to mark equipment, baggage, and vehicles when crossing the English Channel to France with P.O.M. markings.

This book can be used to identify items in your collection to the unit they belonged.

We only have 174 books left, so don't miss your opportunity to grab your copy today. Simply order on the website and your book will be sent out as soon as it lands with us.
