Born on Sept. 29, 1932, in Fremont, Ohio, graduated from Fremont Ross High School in 1950 and Bowling Green State University in 1955. He received a Master's degree in counseling from Troy State University after he retired from the U.S. Army in 1974. He served in the U.S. Navy during the Korean War, and completed two tours in Vietnam as an officer in the U.S. Army. During his distinguished military career he was decorated with five bronze stars.
