TSC Posted January 20, 2017 Share #1 Posted January 20, 2017 Hello all, I have this large canteen cover which I have never seen before. The one of the left is a normal sized cover and the one on the right is the larger one. Is this for a special sized canteen? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks, Tony

dustin Posted January 20, 2017 Share #3 Posted January 20, 2017 Check the bottom of the cover for a false bottom, in other words a removable insert.
TSC Posted January 21, 2017 Author Share #4 Posted January 21, 2017 Thanks for the reply. There's no false bottom, it appears that it was fabricated this way. The canteen and cup slide all the way to the bottom, so you can barely see the canteen cap (2nd picture).
WWII_GI Posted January 21, 2017 Share #5 Posted January 21, 2017 http://www.usmilitariaforum.com/forums/index.php?/topic/206193-oversized-jqmd-1944-canteen-covers/ Here's a topic that talks about them, I've got one just like it but a little more worn and also missing the false bottom. Yours is quite a nice one! -Steven
pararaftanr2 Posted January 21, 2017 Share #6 Posted January 21, 2017 I was lucky to pick one up with the insert years ago, but never knew what it was until Dustin's research came to light. Unfortunately, there were no silver Rupees to be found. Bottom photo may possibly(?) show one in use by a VMSB-231 pilot in the PTO.
ccyooper Posted January 22, 2017 Share #7 Posted January 22, 2017 Can you feel a silk/cloth map?
pararaftanr2 Posted January 22, 2017 Share #8 Posted January 22, 2017 ccyooper, I should have been more specific in that the insert is completely removable. You can see the underside of it below the canteen and cup in the first image I posted. The top side of the insert, shown here, is felt covered to match the canteen carrier's interior. No, there weren't any "goodies" inside this one, unfortunately.
TSC Posted January 22, 2017 Author Share #9 Posted January 22, 2017 Appreciate all the help and the links to this particular topic. Based on the threads there was an oversized RSE made canteen that would fit this cover. Also mine does not have the supplemental pad as shown previous threads. Attached is in the inside of mine.
