Different US Navy VF-96 patches

I was hoping someone might be able to educate me as to when each of these two different patch designs was worn by Navy Fighter Squadron 96, VF-96. Most on-line reference I can find to VF-96 patches will always show the version with the falcon in flight. Could they both have been worn at the same time? Prior to VF-96 being designated as such in 1962, the squadron was designated as VF-142 from 1953-1962 and their patch is very similar to the falcon on the arm version. Could the falcon on the arm version actually be VF-142 and not VF-96? All of these patch images were taken from the bluejackets website. Thanks for any information.

Hi

The "Fighting 96' patch was worn by the 1968 WestPac cruise starting in january 1968 aboard Big E. Prior this cruise the patch used from 1 june 1962 was the one in the middle. As you already found the last one was worn prior 1962 when VF 96 was designated VF 142.
