84th Division - "Railsplitter" WWI Helmet w/Journal and Unit Roster

Recommended Posts

I recently acquired this WWI 84th Division helmet. This helmet came with a journal and unit roster. This helmet belonged to Cpl. Harry Albert Slack. Cpl Slack was born on May 15, 1893, in Troy, Ohio. According to Ancestry.com he enlisted in the National Army on June 24, 1918, in Troy, Ohio. He served with the 158 Depot Brigade, Co F 309 Supply Train until discharged from the service. He was with the American Expeditionary Forces from September 16, 1918 – June 27, 1919. Cpl Slack was Honorably Discharged on July 5, 1919. The entries in the journal span from August 1918 - June 1919. In September 1918 he was located in Hoboken, New Jersey, Pier 90 and Camp Mills, Long Island New York. He departed New York for Europe on September 17, 1918. He arrived in Liverpool, England on September 29, 1918. On October 2, 1918 he took a train to Southampton and subsequently departed Southampton for Le Harve, France on October 3, 1918. While in France he drove various vehicles to include a Packard Tank, Pierce Arrow, Mack Truck and a Cadillac. On April 9, 1919 he drove troops from the 36th Division for review by General Pershing. His last entry on June 27, 1919 he wrote "Stepped on Gods Country" (Note: Cpl Slack arrived in the U.S.A).

The following is the Co. F, 309th Supply Train Unit Roster. Most of the soldiers from Ohio and Kentucy listed on the roster were cross referenced with a document I found on Ancestry.com. The document is titled: List of Men Ordered to Report to the Local Board for Military Duty. And for Transportation to the Mobilization Camp at Camp Taylor, Louisville. This document was specific to the service members for the 309th Supply Train.
