VMFA-312 had about 500 of these made when we were in Japan in 1987, in Iwakuni. The squadron coffee mess officer was responsible for getting them made and sold. We weren't very happy with the end result, because the dog looks crosseyed! This patch looks like one of those to me. (I was in VMFA-312 as the S-2 Chief from 1985-1989...go Checkerboards!)
