A Posthumous USN Green Box Air Medal group to a Cactus Airman

This group has always intrigued me. I bought it years and years ago and traded them to a friend of mine ( and I never should have) and I just got them back to stay for good. I just got his service record last week.

He was an only child and I am sure when his parents died there was no one to care for the medals. In 1940 he and his parents were the only Hynsons living in Iowa. His mother died in 1944 and his Father in 1956. Both his Mother and Father had sisters born in the 19th century. I am sure there may be surviving cousins in their 90's or 2nd Cousins in their 70's , however the medals are in a good home now and will seen by thousands in this virtual museum (the USMF).

ARM3C Hynson was a radioman gunner with Bombing Squadron 10 on the USS Enterprise and also at Henderson Field on Guadalcanal as part of Cactus. He earned his Air Medal for the mission in which he was killed. He was actually awarded 2 PUCs, one for the USS Enterprise and one from the 1st Marine Division for Guadalcanal.

On the day he was killed he and his pilot ditched in the ocean after being attacked by Japanese planes. The life raft failed to deploy. They both started to tread water. 3 days later the pilot made it to an island and was rescued. ARM3c Hynson did not survive.

During the Battle of The Coral Sea he was serving with VB-2 on the Lexington and was awarded a letter of Commendation.

If you read both of the attached citations, if it had been later in the war, he would have been awarded a DFC and and Air Medal and not an Air Medal and a Commendation Letter. Awards were not given out liberally early in the war.

A finding of death was issued in November 1945, which explains why the Purple Heart is a Type II. The Navy thought there might be a chance he was a POW so he was left as MIA from 1942-1945.

Rest in Peace sailor. You are not forgotten.

I'm glad you were able to keep this group from becoming a lost piece if history in lieu of the airman having no surviving immediate family. Thank you for posting!

So I went looking for a picture of Hynson and came across a few interesting articles.  RIP sailor.
