Myers Posted December 24, 2016 #1 Posted December 24, 2016 I just picked up this pair of 504th PIR unit insignia. From my best guess, these are very early WWII. There are no maker marks and they are both pin back. If anyone has any information concerning them, I would love to know more. tredhed2 Posted December 25, 2016 #3 Posted December 25, 2016 Have yet to see a source confirming the 504th wore DIs during WW II.
Myers Posted December 25, 2016 Author #4 Posted December 25, 2016 I've been doing some digging and I agree, I can't find any photographic evidence showing they were used during the war. Doesn't seem like there is much more information on them. I would love to hear any comments or ideas of their vintage. Thanks!
MBS Posted December 25, 2016 #5 Posted December 25, 2016 The 504th was constituted in February 1942 as the 504th parachute infantry. They were activated in May 1942 at Fort Benning. Then assigned to the 82nd Airborne Division August 1942. They were redesignated the 504th Airborne Infantry in December 1947. In September 1957 they were relieved from the 82nd and reorganized as the 504th Infantry, a parent regiment under CARS.There is an earlier DI that was sample approved March 12, 1953 but it has no dash between the two words in the motto. Another DI, with the dash, was sample approved January 3, 1968.From my resources and the evidence I have seen it is my opinion that your DI dates from the 1950's to the late 1960's. I find no proof that there was an early WWII era DI for the 504th PIR. Brent
Myers Posted December 25, 2016 Author #6 Posted December 25, 2016 Hi Brent, I appreciate the information, I wasn't able to find any specific information concerning the DUI timeline. You have helped immensely.
GDMortarman Posted January 21, 2017 #7 Posted January 21, 2017 Would you want to sell these to a former 504th guy?
