In his discharge papers at point 18 REMARKS there is a decription (VIETNAM BADGE OF HONOUR(SIGNAL)

He was in the 52d signal battalion

I also have a award document that he is authorized to wear the distinctive insignia signal corps vietnam forces so mystery resolved.
