digi-shots Posted December 11, 2016 Share #1 Posted December 11, 2016 Is there any way to date these two patches? Both have nice looking "snow" on the back, but they are definitely different. The one on the left appears to have been taken off a uniform (I can see the stitch holes when held up to the light). The GUADALCANAL letters are so much cleaner and more detailed and the blue thread has more of a pattern to it. I'm also curious about the one on the right... never saw a patch with a name I.D. Thanks!

KurtA Posted December 11, 2016 Share #4 Posted December 11, 2016 Other than "1940's" no way to more precisely date them. Just two different manufacturers.

Brig Posted December 13, 2016 Share #6 Posted December 13, 2016 My guess is he was setting up his marking kit and wanted to test the stamp, and figured it would never get seen back there
warcollect1942 Posted December 13, 2016 Share #7 Posted December 13, 2016 During wartime no body looked at the back of a patch. Government requisitions didn't mention the color or amount of bobbin thread. Collectors were the first to look at the backs of patches. This is how we have snow backs greenbacks purple backs and black backs. The amount of snow depends on the tension of the bobbin.
digi-shots Posted December 13, 2016 Author Share #8 Posted December 13, 2016 Thanks for all the comments! I had a fleeting thought about tracking his name but there's just too many Plunkett's to even begin. I thought if I could narrow down the time frame as to when the patch was made it might help. Brig Posted December 14, 2016 Share #9 Posted December 14, 2016 Well, you can at least narrow it down to the Plunketts in 1stMarDiv
